Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Good afternoon everyone to Pottington Road for this festive annual Boxing day derby between Barnstaple and Bideford. we extend a warm welcome to everyone who has turned up today and hope you have a brilliant time here at Pottington Road. Today's matches begins with a 12pm kick off between the colts over on the 2nd pitch and is followed by the 1st teams as they take to the main pitch at 2pm.

Bideford have had a winning start to their season winning eight of their 13 games so far this year. More importantly they have won four of their last five outings including an away win at Somerset's Wells RFC last time out.

Barnstaple Chiefs secured the Christmas No.1 spot this year with a thumping 61-19 at Old Pats. That's a first away win for the Chiefs at that dreaded slope for 15 years and keeps Barnstaple in the running as we approach the second half of the season. So far this season the players and coaches have done us proud, with some memorable performances and great results. Given the huge number of injuries we have had this season it's been especially pleasing to see so many players step up their game as they come into the first team and have such a great impact well done lads.

However with Exmouth just two points behind and Lydney five its going to be full on for the rest of the season. We still have to visit Ding's Crusaders, Lydney and the Hornets during the 2nd half of the season, all will be very hard fought games and those teams just looking to pounce on any slip ups, and of course the prospect of a mouth watering final game at Exmouth which i personally can't wait for. Before all that though we have three local derbies to kick off the new year. Visits to Ivybridge on the 2nd January and Newton Abbot on the16th lie either side of a chance to avenge our cup defeat with a home game against Brixham on the 9th January with a 2pm kickoff.

The Development XV find themselves in the unusual position if being 3rd at the half way point. its been a tough start so far for them but two big wins just recently should see them reemerge as the main challengers for the merit title again. Unfortunately you will only see them at home against Ivybridge on the 2nd January as they have a string of away fixtures right up until end of Feb.

Anyone wishing to see the Colts as they strive towards another Sandy Park engagement at the end of the season will find them at home on the 9th and 23rd January and again on the 13th of February. Come along and not only watch some great Junior rugby but also the players that will take Barnstaple forward in the years to come.

I hope everyone has a great day today and the rain keeps away. Good luck to all the teams playing today and lets have a cracking game of rugby.

A Xmas Thank You To all the volunteers

As many of you know a successful Saturday afternoon takes alot of effort and planning. The maintance and upkeep of our buildings, The pitches need extensive upkeep and have looked fabulous as always, The bar has to be prepared and stocked, kit has to be washed, the gates manned, programmes written and printed, sponsors organised and catered for, fixtures confirmed and coaches booked, accounts prepared and invoices paid. The list goes on. Recent activities have included the redecoration of the changing rooms, installation of physio space in the old pavilion and the construction of a new bar cellar in the Patron’s Suite. And also the great number of coaches and trainers who organise hundreds of juniors every Sunday morning.

Its these and many other volunteers that make Barnstaple RFC such a great club so a huge thank you for the massive amount of time and work you put into the club for nothing more than a love of Rugby and of course Barnstaple RFC have a great Xmas and New Year.

Pez's Ponderings

Welcome all,

The first half of the season has been a revelation...... Barnstaple are Christmas number one……...Fantastic!

What makes this even more pleasing is how we have dealt with the amount of players injured or unavailable every week. Whoever has worn the shirt, has stood up to be counted to produce a record so far of played 13, won 10, drawn 1, lost 2.

Last weekend we visited Old Patesians at Everest Rd, I've never heard a more apt name, it was bleak, puddle filled, the pitch is on a 45-degree angle, wind rushing down it.... The lads produced an honest, physical and motivated performance, to win resoundingly 19-61 at a ground we had not won at in some 15 years.

Today is a wonderful occasion for both clubs, the support shown every year in this annual fixture is exceptional, whomever takes the field is lucky to have the opportunity, thank you all for coming. I can only ask that this is not the only fixture that you will attend at Pottington Rd and that you will come again to experience the Barum spirit.

Merry Christmas from the Players and myself.

Junior News

Junior matches and training restart on Sunday January 10th 2016.  This is the time of year we move the mini’s training away from the Club and use Pilton School’s astro pitch and school gym and also Yeo Valley School grounds.

Just before Christmas we heard the sad news that one of our former coaches, Jon Gray, passed away. Jon coached the current Under 14’s when they were much smaller. Our condolences go to his wife and children.

I would like to wish all of the junior section players, coaches and volunteers all the best for the coming year.

Alan East.  Junior Section Chairman
